Around the world, nearly 200 million people live with chronic insomnia. In a fast-moving, always-connected world, sleep has quietly become one of the greatest challenges of modern life.
Long work hours, family responsibilities, and the constant rhythm of daily demands often keep our minds racing long after we lie down. If the world cannot immediately grow quiet, perhaps we can begin with something simple — turning off the lights.
This World Sleep Day, we invite you to create a personal “buffer zone before sleep.” Through three stages of lighting at home, allow the body and mind to settle, rediscover the quiet of the night, and practice the gentle art of letting yourself rest.

In nature, evening light gradually shifts from the cool brightness of midday (5000–6500K) to the warmer tones of sunset (around 2700K). This gentle transition signals the body to slow down and prepare for the night.
In modern life, artificial lighting and glowing screens often blur the boundary between day and night. Keeping home lighting within a warm range of 2700–3000K helps restore a more natural rhythm and reduce blue-light interference with melatonin.
When a living room is bathed in warm, sunset-like light, both body and mind begin to unwind.

Turning on a bright ceiling light may signal “daytime” to the brain and disrupt the sleep cycle. A well-designed bedside lamp provides enough light without disturbing your sleep.

In the lighting philosophy of Seeddesign, a bedside lamp is more than illumination. It is a gentle punctuation mark at the end of the day — accompanying the final page of a book, gathering the scattered moments of a busy day, and quietly handing them over to the night.
Many years ago, Meiric visited Florence and was intrigued by the “Jersey Barrier”, a modular concrete employed to separate lanes of traffic, that stood in the middle of the square. The delicate work of the fence amazed him and broke his stereotype against “cement objects”. While he was impressed, a bold idea occurred to him: “Is it possible to use cement as a material for lighting?”
That’s where it all began the following cement materials experiment for over two years.
At that time, you could never see a cement lamp in the market, every experimental idea was an adventure. At the beginning it was even difficult to reach a breakthrough making the cement strong enough to avoid cracking. After a series of failures, the R&D team turned to looking for a composite material. In a series of approaches eventually coming up with a formula and appropriate temperature that effectively accelerated the concrete curing and crystallized in this way encloses the aggregate particles and produces a dense material , ensuring its comprehensive and impact strengths by a critical 40-degree impact test. The mold, on the other hand, is hand-made with inner high-precision silicone rubber + outer plaster for easy demolding and for giving that delicate and smooth texture.
In addition to material innovation, another key factor to make this work is the production process management.
The mixed cement has to be evacuated by vacuum machine to 6~8 cmHg (Centimetres of mercury, while the atmospheric pressure is 76 cmHg). After the machine stops stirring, the concrete material begins to solidify. At this time, the master has to precisely control the timing and volume of the grout, keeping it slow, and focusing on every detail, while filling into the mold. Any tiny slip-up in this stage may result in unwanted imperfections such as cracks or holes.
In order to prevent the shade from cracking by dramatical change of temperature and humidity, there is a wash-and-soak procedure extending the dry-up period. The cement crystallized in this way encloses the aggregate particles and produces a dense material. Each piece is gently hand washed and polished by P600 sandpaper back and forth one at a time and carefully wiped and patted dry., and it is then removed outdoor 5-7 days for drying. A cement lampshade is officially completed.

“ Find your own light ”
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Li, Hui Lun found herself working from home for extended periods. She noticed that switching on her bedroom light would disturb her family members sharing the same space. This observation sparked an idea: to design a ‘personal light’ that would provide illumination without causing disruption. And thus, WÚ was born.
With its double-shaft design, WÚ offers versatile lighting options, allowing users to adjust both horizontal and vertical angles by extending the arm to the desired distance and rotating the shade to cast a 66° beam onto objects without interference. Beyond serving as a downward light, when recessed into its niche and the shade flipped upward, it can also provide indirect wall washing illumination, perfect for creating a relaxing ambiance.

#Take the personal using habit into your consideration.
If you frequently read before sleep, a sufficient light would be absolutely needed to support, for example the rotatable lamp type allows to adjust the light direction to your object without interrupting your bedmate. SIRCLE, a symbolization merged Square and Circle, inspired by the East aesthetic philosophy, the circular light ball just like a soft tender mind leaning on a sound substantial frame, chemically shaped a harmonious feature with its flexible body inside-out. Meanwhile, the fantastic performance of light through the opal mouth-blown glass, spreading the beauty of moonlight all over the space.

MUMU
Designer Kuo, Keng Dian
Combining the coolness of metal and the warmth of wood, MUMU appears simple, peaceful yet detailed. The round angle of the edge balanced the sharpness of lines, and the 320° rotation is quite user friendly.
DORA
Designer Chang, Ting Ting/ Li, Hui Lun
Oh So Chic! One of the popular collections DORA since 2015, which was inspired by designer Ting’s childhood, who wanted to create a collection that was versatile, interactive, and fun! Dora is adorable as jewelry, being crystal and shine, either pendant or wall lamp will be a good fit for the bedside.

LING

With an airy grace, LING provides ample lighting yet remains clean and seamless. A twin lamp with uplight and downlight allows it emits ambient and projecting light at the same time. The rotating design echoed the practical spirit, which is more than beautiful but thoughtful.

Creating a lamp involves not only a design concept that brims with creativity, but also a group of precise craftsmen who can turn imagination into reality – the SEEDDESIGN Research and Development team.
The SEEDDESIGN R&D team brings the creative vision of designers to reality by using unique structures and innovative materials. With years of experience and skillful hands, they meticulously oversee the production process – from welding to shaping and polishing, through their dedication and attention to details, the team artfully brings together beauty and functionality in every SEEDDESIGN lamp.
Vice General Manager: Gong, Yu Quan
Mr. Gong, the VGM of SEEDDESIGN, is known for his dedication to challenges and meticulous approach. Since 1997, he has been leading the R&D team to create numerous classic products, emphasizing the importance of strict supervision of every production process. He enjoys tackling difficult problems and ensures that every light can be placed in the ideal space of each customer with the highest quality.
That morning, Mr. Gong shared little-known stories about product development and production in the meeting room after returning from the factory.
Can you introduce your job responsibilities to everyone?
– Essentially, I hold responsibility for the entire product creation process.
Once the mission has been defined, I collaborate with various departments to review feasibility assessments. After that, I oversee the production of all materials and manufacturing methods to ensure that they meet quality standards.
What’s the toughest process of turning a design blueprint into a finished product?
– I believe it’s welding for sure.
Welding is the most challenging step due to potential metal deformation caused by high temperatures. Even with robotic welding, it is difficult to achieve the same level of precision as manual adjustments performed by skilled craftsmen. Other than that, computer-controlled machining, including CNC lathes, milling machines, and punches, is typically more precise and manageable.
What is the most remarkable lamp you have ever made?
– LALU+ pendant lamp.
The lamp requires a complex process that involves multiple welding stages, as well as careful attention to accuracy due to its rotatable stem. When welding two D-shaped tubes to form the oval stem, any excess can lead to uneven weight distribution and cause the lamp post to tilt. That’s why we rely on skilled craftsmen to meticulously remove any resulting weld marks and achieve a flawless finish that allows for smooth rotation.
Which of the Seed collections is your favorite one?
– Planet floor lamp.
The lamp’s arm can be extended to the desired distance, and its height can also be adjusted by rotating the gears. I love the gears, which have a finely tuned engineering design and are very functional. I often adjust the arm in different ways and think about how to optimize its usability while playing with it on my desk.
What is your approach to continuously breaking through technical challenges?
– When faced with technical challenges, we take an approach of continuous learning and collaboration.
We visit other processing plants to gather insights and improve our capabilities, and work closely with our partners to overcome bottlenecks. We also stay current with the latest technology and equipment, conducting internal experiments and searching for opportunities to establish standard systems. One example of this is our DJ DIMMER structure, which underwent a rigorous experimental process, undergoing at least 23,000 cycles of rotation to ensure durability before it was launched.
What are the most significant changes for you since setting up the factory in 1997 until now?
–Well, not much has changed fundamentally.
My main goal has always been to make steady progress. Over the past 20 years, I have emphasized to my colleagues the importance of staying focused and careful to maintain high quality. We cannot afford to skip any steps in production to save time. It’s not rocket science, but we need to do it right to succeed.
Have you ever felt proud to work for SEED?
– Absolutely, it’s a great honor.
Our design concept, emotional engagement, and every production process for our collections are of high-end quality. Even our external manufacturers take pride in producing our products, and one plastic factory mentioned that their customers recognize their superior quality because they make parts for SEED. Although our competitors may try to replicate our ideas, our top-notch products speak for themselves.
What has driven you for the past twenty years or so?
– Being able to face different challenges always excites me!
The complexity of making lighting fixtures with a wide range of materials can make the job challenging, but since my first day at SEED, I have eagerly tackled any issues that arise and genuinely look forward to coming to work every day.
Moreover, SEED’s work environment is excellent, with design director Mr. Chen giving me the freedom to showcase my skills. Many of my colleagues have been with the company for over a decade, and as time went on, we have all become friends!
The design director in Seed, Meiric, plays a huge role in how the group reacts and moves forward, for whom he must consider the relationship between the brand, design, and people from a broader perspective .
Lamp designers are like poets who wander and seize every fleeting inspiration in daily life, transforming the ideas into sketches with the Midas touch, and refine to a sophisticated and timeless work to light up the darkness.
How do you want your lighting fixture to be a showstopper, or something more modest that will be also eye-catching yet induce a calming-type effect? From minimal and modern to fun and eclectic, Seed’s linear suspensions are available in a wide range of styles, ideally blend into your space while you want it to be a very simplified and clean representation.
TRAM
With unrestrained lighting layout, TRAM consists of genuine brass for its electric conductivity, the lamp spots wirelessly connect to the brass track, that can be repositioned and 360°-rotated.

OLO Φ PL4
Having a steady frame joined in, that balances the flexible movement of light. The linear U-band frame holds the four of hollow shades, which reduces light contrast and allows the light to diffuse in a gentle, calm, and graceful way.
Have you ever experienced eyes fatigue and blur after sitting under a pendant lamp for a while? This short symptom of glare is probably caused by improper use of lighting such as wrong hanging height.
